Out with the old… in with the new

It’s May.

We’re all done our 2009-2010 year!

Congratulations to every one graduating and heading off to shape their world.

To all of you coming back next year – or off to a new challenge – I want to wish you all the best of luck.

It has been an incredible year for me as your CUSA rep and as a journalism student. As we still have no confirmed journalism rep for next year I’ll be keeping tabs of this blog (although as you have noticed… I haven’t been doing a very good job)

Returning students –

If you have any questions about your courses next year please don’t hesitate to get in touch. There are so many choices and definitely one that’s right for you. Don’t be afraid to take your time….. especially if you’re heading to fourth year!

As for me, I’m off to Rwanda at the end of the month as part of the school’s Rwanda Initiative. Follow my adventures on Facebook: Rwanda Calling

Enjoy the sunshine!

Get Involved with JHR Next Year!

Hi everyone,

If you’re interested in getting a little (or a lot!) involved involved in CJHR next year, please stop by the fourth-floor lobby of St. Pat’s this Tuesday, April 13 at 1 p.m. for an organizational meeting. At this meeting we will discuss:

+ Executive positions for next year
+ Group structure for next year
+ Future plans

Current members should brainstorm the nature of their involvement in the 2010-2011 club. We’ll reach decisions on executive positions as a group. Please come prepared with the following:

+ A suggestion of your position’s title (e.g. President, Vice-President, Administrator, Finance)
+ A description of that position (Feel free to invent something — be creative!)
+ An idea as to how you would engage Carleton students and CJHR members in club activities

Don’t be shy. The meeting will be informal and brief, and you don’t have to be a super-active member to propose a role for next year.

If you can’t make it to the meeting… please send us your proposed position and description by email by noon on April 13.

We look forward to hearing your ideas!

All the best,

CJHR Exec

THANK YOU

Last night’s Journalism Prom 2010 was a great success!

Thank you to all the students who came out to spend one last evening together before we all run off into the world.

A special thanks to my fellow organizing committee: Abigail Bailey, Alex Stand and Nick Bergamini for taking on more than what you all bargained for. Thanks to Diana Szpotowicz for getting us off to the right start.

It meant a lot to see some of our favourite profs out: Chris Waddell, Dave Tait, Mary McQuire and Jeff Sallot. Not to mention the wonderful Elizabeth!

I hope you all had a wonderful time and I can’t wait to see you all in the eschelons of powers!

Good luck with all your future endeavors class of 2010.
And to all you 1st, 2nd and 3rd years yearning to be done… enjoy the moment of J-school because soon it will all be over and you’ll be craving an article.

Cheers

Allie 😉

GOOOOO JOURNALISM!!!!!

Journalism Prom

It’s almost that time of year… mark April 6th on your calendars!

For 4th year/MJ2s… this year will end with one of our greatest fears… prom.

Every year we all get together, reminisce, drink, dance, and enjoy our last night all-together before we fly off into the world.

To make this year the best it can be, we’re putting together a grad video… But it won’t be complete without pictures and videos by you!

Send us your embarrassing, beautiful, funny, and important pictures from your years at Carleton. Email them to: carletonjournalism@gmail.com or submit them to the J-Prom committee personally.

We’ll also start getting video confessions from y’all over the next few weeks.

Cheers,

Allie

Carleton Students Support Haiti

Action for Haiti

Courtesy of UN

A tent village after a powerful earthquake devestated Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. Help is needed immidiately to save the millions affected by the disaster.

We have all been affected by the earthquake in Haiti. Our hearts cannot help but hurt when we see the devastating images on our screen and the cries of help from the people. Many students want to know how they can help. I’m aware of two organizations fundraising, but I can imagine there are many more. If you know of any, let me know and I’ll add it to the list.

As journalism students especially, we are paying close attention to the coverage and following it closely. But it’s also important we look at it more than a story, more than another disaster. We can’t just reach into our minds to pull out the right words, we must reach into our wallets and find something there to give.

Carleton University’s Student Association is helping support Haitian relief efforts by supporting the Haiti Emergency Relief fund, Partners and Health, and the member organizations of the Humanitarian Coalition (Save the Children Canada, Care Canada, Oxfam Canada and Oxfam-QuĂ©bec).

Watch for volunteers in the Atrium, a garage sale, a talent show, and more. You can also make donations in the CUSA Office.

UNICEF Carleton will be starting their donation campaign next week. The club wanted to let everyone know all UNICEF workers in Haiti are safe and will participate in the relief effort. Donate here.

Thank you for your support. I’ll have more soon.

Welcome Back! ~ Janurary 2010

Hey J-Schoolers

Welcome back to Carleton. 2010 will be so much fun! And lots of work…

First off I’d like to apologize for dropping the ball on the website. As many of us did, I got caught up in exams and final assignments in December then wanted nothing to do with school during the break.

But a week in… it’s about time to start things up again. And we’re going to have a busy month!

This Thursday is the first CUSA Council meeting of the new year. It will be held in 2203 Dunton Tower at 6pm. As soon as an agenda becomes available I will post it in the CUSA section. Also, elections for CUSA’s 2010-2011 Council will begin in February. If you’re thinking of running send me an email for more info.

Journalists for Human Rights will be launching their radio program very soon. Check here for more details when they become available.

For those of you applying for grad school… deadlines are coming up! If you’re thinking of working, the job boards outside Elizabeth’s office will be filling up with opportunities soon – don’t forget to take a peak!

And finally if you’re graduating this year the Journalism Society is starting to plan J-Prom. Just in case your high school prom went terribly… you now have a chance to start anew!

Keep checking here for all your j-school info. No more ball dropping on my end.

Cheers,

Allie
